now we will talk about the Aboriginals the old claimers of the country, they got split up into different categories like First Nations, Metis, and Inuits. First nations got split up in two different groups of their own called status Indians and non-status Indians, status Indians are those who are recognized by the government meaning the canadian government developed a criteria to determine who would be legally considered as Indians and who weren't, also status Indians have a lot of benefits like living on reserves, having access to the money generated by the treaty lands and have federal benefits such as health benefits. Non-status where those who identified themselves as indians but for some reason did not register with the government. Metis are a mix of american Indians and europeans. finally Inuits are aboriginals that live in the cold northern parts of Canada like Greenland and Alaska. Lets talk about the Indian act, established in 1876 the government created the indian act, an act that give the government control over whether who was legally Indian or not. it was the intention of the government that assimilate the first nations into Canadian civilization through a process called "enfranchisement". Any women under enfranchisement that married a non native, and status Indian that become a doctor, lawyer, joined the army or had a title on a piece of land lost their status. In an attempt to educate the native children's residential schools were established in the Indian act, Canada's curriculum taught kids to their abandon traditional culture due to them having to adapt without haunting buffalos, and move to agricultural areas. Under the indian act Metis and inuits are also status, but status people had to live on reserves they could not buy or lease their own property. The Aboriginals say we should erase the Indian act so they can live there on life without having to follow an rules meaning they can by their land, chose their own career pathways, marry who they want, and much more, also almost 70% of aboriginals are 25 or younger.
